Did you know that the unbridled use of asbestos can cause the killer disease, mesothelioma cancer?

Asbestos is a kind of fibrous mineral that was used extensively in construction, insulation, and sheeting materials until the 1970s when it was mostly banned because of its harmful effects. Despite the ban, however, the risk of exposure to asbestos is still quite high in certain residential areas (i.e. those neighborhoods near an asbestos factory) as well as in the workplace of these factories.

The person to consult when you want to learn more about asbestos and the danger it poses to a person’s health is an asbestos consultant.

Responsibilities

It is the primary responsibility of the asbestos consultant to spread awareness of the dangers associated with exposure to asbestos. They give out information about the harmful effects of asbestos as well as steps to take in order to avoid mesothelioma, asbestosis and other serious lung disorders that are caused or aggravated by exposure to asbestos.

Beyond helping individuals become more aware about the potential harmful effects of asbestos and providing them with ways to prevent the onset of diseases, asbestos consultants also take a proactive step in the larger scheme of things. For instance, they help spread information about the strict laws passed by the government, regulating the use of asbestos and asbestos containing material in various industries.

In addition, asbestos consultants aid the industries in their adherence to the laws and in establishing proper safety procedures to adopt in the workplace. That way, the workers are protected from asbestos danger and from developing serious diseases relating to asbestos exposure.

The asbestos consultant may also check residential and commercial buildings for the presence of asbestos containing materials. To do that, he first conducts a survey of the entire area and determines if there are any asbestos containing materials. If the area comes out positive for asbestos, he then assesses it to determine its condition.

As a general rule of thumb, any asbestos containing material that is in good condition is usually left on its own with the asbestos consultant leaving you with a management plan to minimize disturbance around this area. However, if the material is in bad condition or in a state of disrepair, the asbestos consultant may recommend repairs to be done or outright removal of the entire material.

Removal of asbestos containing material is the more expensive option. Moreover, removal presents the most danger of exposure since the process could cause the asbestos fibers to be released. When airborne, asbestos fibers could be inhaled or otherwise ingested by persons, causing exposure which could later develop into serious lung diseases.

The asbestos consultant will usually recommend removal of asbestos containing materials only as a last resort. And only trained licensed professionals should do the removal.
